A native of New Brunswick, Jim was born in Saint John. Although mostly a self taught artist, he received some formal training in his earlier school years at Vocational School under the watchful eye of such known artists as Vi Gillett, Julie Crawford, and Ted Campbell and, in later years, through a correspondence course. The business world had kept him from becoming active in the field of painting until1974 when he again began sketching and painting as a hobby.

He has been quite successful in portraits in both oils and pastels. His love for the rural and coastal scenery of his native New Brunswick and the Maritimes is evident in his landscape and seascape paintings. Jim has had several successful solo and group exhibitions and has received many commissions for various occasions. His paintings hang in private collections across Canada, the United States and Europe.

Since joining the Fredericton Society of Artists he has attended workshops in watercolors and has become proficient in the techniques. He has been quite successful in the Society's annual exhibitions and has been the recipient of the People's Choice award.
